The Role of Architectural Design in Promoting the Social Objectives of Zoos

A Study of Zoo Exhibit Design with Reference to Selected Exhibits in Singapore Zoological Gardens

by Michael Graetz

PART 4 CASE STUDIES

4.1 Introduction to the Case Studies

Five exhibits in Singapore Zoo plus the whole Night Safari park were selected for a detailed examination of the responses they elicit from visitors. The methods adopted for the study primarily consisted of directed polling of visitors at each exhibit with a battery of questions designed to gather their qualitative responses. The survey instruments generally consisted of questionnaires differing according to the specific responses postulated for each exhibit. An exception to this format was an unobtrusive study of visitor movements through the ‘Primate Kingdom’ complex.

The five exhibit studies are:

  1. Polar Bear and Sealion
  2. Pygmy Hippo
  3. Underwater View Exhibits (A comparison of the Polar Bear, Pygmy Hippo and Crocodile Exhibits.)
  4. ‘Primate Kingdom’
  5. ‘Cat Country’
  6. ‘Night Safari’

A full tabulation of the collected data is in appendix A.
